Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture
Some shots from here and there while hanging at the WQS Hyuga Pro. There was hope of a small Typhoon forming off the coast while we were there, but it never did eventuate. Instead the waves have been painfully small for the past week.

River mouth
I was pretty stoked to have the opportunity to surf this river mouth with only 4 of us out...It's renowned as having one of the heaviest local presence in Japan and you pretty much need an invite, or be with someone in the know to surf it. Kinda hammers home how different the surfing scene is over here... there seems to be territory lines for each break and everyone only surfs their local most of the time. Kinda frustrating when the local is average and you just know the beach down the road is pumping.
Although it wasn't as big as we were hoping, Bonga Perkins, Tosh Omi(simmo Japan distributor) and myself had some sic little runners. Rode my green PROJECTIONflex 'Kicking Mule' model this day.

Mic Growing Surf shop, Tahara
I recently jumped on the Bullet Train and shot down to Tahara City to spent 3 days with my friends at Mic pro surf shop. A total contrast to where I am staying near Tokyo, as it's pretty much country meets ocean. Not much to do other than surf, eat and cruise! The waves where really fun for majority of the time, which gave me good opportunity to surf and hang out with some of our customers and friends alike.

Japan day1
Im sure the people of this small Japanese town weren't prepared when they left their homes this morning to see a large framed, white, round-eye lurking around their streets. haha that's my impression anyways.
The Japan quiver...

Epoxy
A couple of new small wave boards for team rider Jay Phillips. The one on the left is a bit of a mash up of an old favourite(5'8"x19"x2 3/16"), and the other one is a 'Livewire' model(5'9"x18 5/8"x2 3/16") built using EPS core and epoxy resin. I don't use Epoxy construction to often but Jay wanted his 'Livewire' super lite for when the waves are tiny and he's gotta surf competition.

Land of the Rising sun...
Generally when you think of waves in Japan, you think small and powerless. This article on Surfline shows some of the potential of the land of the rising sun. Hopefully I can find some of these gems when I'm there in a couple of months. Fingers crossed!

PROJECTIONflex!
Introducing a new technology we're pretty excited about here at simmo shapes... PROJECTIONflex! The name was created from the feeling the recoil flex creates, projecting forward with great speed and a unique feel.
Good time-o-year

The MULE!
One of the new models for 2011 is 'The Mule'. Inspired whilst on location in Japan last year where the waves are quite flat and powerless, 'The Mule' is another addition to the momentum series for small waves. Featuring a low fast entry rocker and Medium-low tail rocker, along with a Hi-low rail (flat deck to medium-low rail)... a combination which will have you paddling into any wave while still offering maximum performance when on rail.
This little work horse will get the job done when the waves are small, which is why it has become a personal favorite of many.
Also coming soon, 'the Kicking MULE!'... 'The MULES' angry brother.
